Abstract

Employing a formalistic analysis set within a broad tradition-history context, this analysis investigates the relationship between Passion story and Gospel story in Mark. Broadhead looks especially at the narrative morphology and narrative syntax of individual stories, their relation to the Passion account, and their interaction with the larger world of the narrative. He reveals in Mark 14-16 a carefully-crafted text which is intimately linked to the larger Gospel story. This is particularly true of the strategies of characterization and of the christological portrait they support. This book i

Abstract

After his definitive The Historical Jesus, John Dominic Crossan delivered Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography-a popularized, bestselling account of what we can know about the life of Jesus. Here he offers the core of his life's work-a concise and astonishing presentation of the authentic teachings and earliest images of the revolutionary Galilean sage. Crossan's fresh translations of Jesus' sayings show Jesus to be a teacher whose radical message that all are equal before God is as timely today as it was two thousand years ago. This picture is dramatically confirmed by the preConstantinian, Christian renderings of Jesus, which show that he was remembered by the first Christians not as God but as a revolutionary healer and leader.

Abstract

In all lists of women with Jesus, Mary Magdalene is placed first. She is one woman whom it has been impossible to ignore. And what has commentary made of her? A prostitute, by falsely associating her with the "sinful woman" of the previous episode in Luke. Ricci examines how and why this happened, in a fascinating inquiry into history and culture. So this is an inquiry into the real nature of Jesus' relationship with women, shown to be truly radical in the context of his time -- and truly liberative. It rediscovers Mary Magdalene, and the "many others" who deserve to be remembered with her, as an essential component of the original "Jesus movement" and the early church. Seeking "to discover whether Jesus' message of liberation had a word to say to me as a woman," Carla Ricci found the key in Luke 8:1-3, which mentions the women with Jesus at the outset of his public activity in Galilee, listed after the Twelve. This, she discovered, is a text the (male) exegetes have systematically ignored for 1900 years. She found a group of women who unswervingly followed Jesus -- the only ones, when the male apostles and disciples fled -- from Galilee to Jerusalem, through his passion and death, to be the messengers of the resurrection.

Abstract

St. Cyril of Alexandria: The Christological Controversy describes the turmoil of 5th century Christianity seeking to articulate its beliefs on the person of Christ. The policies of the Theodosian dynasty and the conflicting interests of the patriarchal sees are set as the context of the controversy between Nestorius of Constantinople and Cyril of Alexandria, a bitter dispute that racked the entire oecumene. The historical analysis expounds the arguments of both sides, particularly the Christology of Cyril which was adopted as a standard. Many major texts are presented in new translations, some of which have never before appeared in English. These writings are essential reading in the history of doctrine. The work will be an indispensable resource for all students of the period: theologians and Byzantinists.
